Android TVs and Home units have become the hallmark of a smart home powered by Google. We’ve seen a fair share of Android TV boxes from a variety of manufacturers, including the Nvidia Shield. For the most part, they offered the same features in slightly-different packages. But when Google announced the JBL Link Bar, we witnessed a different product entirely. Sadly, pre-orders for the Android soundbar have now been hit with delays.

Google has offered some rudimentary backup functionality in Android since the 2.0 days, but it improved backup functionality in 6.0 Marshmallow. However, you still have to trust that the Google Drive backups are happening as there are no user-facing controls. That's going to change in a future version of Android, though.

For dark theme enthusiasts, vindication time is finally here. Not only is Google working on dark themes for many of its apps, several other developers and services have joined the darker side and started implementing these AMOLED-friendly designs in their apps. The latest is Todoist, my personal favorite to-do manager. But that's not the only new thing from the service; it's also rolling out an all-new standalone Wear OS app that lets you manage your tasks without having to install the app on your phone too.

Chrome for Android to end support for Jelly Bean

Android Jelly Bean debuted nearly six years ago in November 2012, and it's currently the oldest version of Android still getting Chrome updates. That looks to be changing soon, though, according to a new commit spotted by XDA Developers.

The commit's description puts it pretty bluntly: "Update UI for unsupported Android OS and make Jelly Bean unsupported." There's no timeline for the change, but once it takes effect, Android KitKat will replace Jelly Bean as the oldest version still supported by Chrome.

Nokia will start rolling out Android Pie updates this month

Nokia's return to the smartphone market by way of HMD has already made an impact thanks to affordable hardware and clean Android One software. Nokia just announced a new phone today, but it isn't forgetting its older devices. During the event, Nokia confirmed the first wave of Android Pie updates should hit its phones this month.

The Snapdragon 600-series phones are first up for Pie with the Nokia 6.1 and 6.1 Plus getting the update later this month.

Given the popularity of smart devices and fitness bands, and how much we tend to rely on these devices, we trust manufacturers to maintain compatibility, but this doesn’t always happen perfectly. Huawei Watch GT leak points to big battery and small price tag

Huawei hasn't released a smartwatch since the spring of 2017, but all signs point to its imminent return. After swinging by the FCC for certification, the Huawei Watch GT has shown up in a new leak. There's an image of the watch, as well as a few details on the pricing and specs. It looks like a rather compelling smartwatch, but Huawei is still stubbornly avoiding the original Huawei Watch aesthetic.
